How to choose your sandals

Start with where you'll wear them. For lots of walking around town, look for a sole with some thickness and straps that hold the instep securely, so your foot doesn't slide forward. For the beach or pool, a lightweight pair that copes with water makes more sense. And for a summer lunch or wedding, a wedge or slingback gives you height without losing stability.

Wedge, flat or slingback

• Wedges: spread your weight along the whole foot, so they feel steadier than a slim heel. A moderate height is the most comfortable choice for long days.
• Flats: ideal for everyday wear. Look for a footbed with some shape or cushioning, as a completely flat sole is more tiring to walk in.
• Slingbacks: open at the heel with a back strap to hold it in place. Check that the strap doesn't rub or slip as you walk.

Materials and comfort

Leather is the most common material in this range: it moulds to your foot over time and lets it breathe, which you'll appreciate in a Costa del Sol summer. Raffia and fabric feel light and summery. Synthetic materials, used in some Birkenstock Arizona styles, are lightweight and easy to wipe clean, so they work well near water.

Fit and sizing

Feet swell slightly in the heat as the day goes on, so it's best to try sandals on in the afternoon. Your toes shouldn't overhang the sole and your heel should sit fully on the footbed. If there are buckles or hook-and-loop straps, adjust them so they hold without pinching. If you're unsure between two sizes, call or email us and we'll help.

Caring for your sandals

Wipe leather with a slightly damp cloth and let it dry in the shade, away from direct heat. A little leather conditioner now and then stops it drying out. Brush raffia and fabric when dry and avoid getting them wet. Synthetic pairs can be washed with water and mild soap. At the end of summer, store them clean and dry somewhere airy.
