Choosing by occasion

Start with how you'll wear them. For everyday errands and weekends, leather casual trainers go with jeans and chinos and stay comfortable through long days on your feet. If you like to slip your shoes on and look a little smarter, loafers and boat shoes are a safe bet, especially in summer. For the office or dinner out, a lace-up looks more polished and lets you adjust the fit over the instep. Ankle boots see you through cooler, wetter days, while sandals are the coolest option when the heat kicks in.

Materials and comfort

Leather breathes, gradually moulds to the shape of your foot and, with a bit of care, lasts for years. Suede and nubuck have a soft, velvety finish and a more relaxed look, though they need more protection from water. Textile uppers are light and cool, and synthetic materials can be handy for sandals that get wet or go to the beach.

Beyond the upper, check the sole: it should flex at the toes and offer good grip. A cushioned or contoured footbed makes a real difference if you walk a lot.

Fit and sizing

You should be able to wiggle your toes freely without your heel slipping as you walk. If you have wide feet or a high instep, lace-ups or adjustable straps give you more room to play with. Try shoes on in the afternoon, when feet are slightly swollen, and walk around before deciding. Leather gives a little with wear, but it shouldn't pinch from day one.

Looking after them

• Smooth leather: wipe with a damp cloth and apply a nourishing cream now and then.
• Suede and nubuck: use a dedicated brush and a protective spray before the first wear.
• Drying: if they get wet, let them dry away from radiators and direct sun, stuffed with paper to hold their shape.
• Rest days: rotating two pairs lets the leather breathe and helps them last longer.
