Choosing your flat sandals

Start with how you'll wear them. For lots of walking, go for a style that holds the top of your foot securely: two-strap sandals with buckles, like the Birkenstock Arizona, let you adjust each strap separately so your foot doesn't slide about. If you want something lighter, toe-post styles such as the Gizeh leave more of the foot bare and look great with summer dresses. For the beach or the pool, a water-friendly pair saves you worrying.

Materials and comfort

Most of our flat sandals have synthetic uppers. Birko-Flor has a leather-like look, is light and wipes clean easily. EVA versions are very lightweight and unbothered by water, which makes them handy for the beach or around the house. If you'd rather have leather, the Mephisto Paris has a leather upper that softens to your foot as you wear it. Whatever you choose, look at the footbed: one with some shape that supports your arch is far less tiring than a completely flat sole. Soft Footbed versions add extra cushioning underfoot.

Fit and sizing

In a flat sandal your whole foot should sit on the footbed, with a little room in front of your toes and behind your heel. If your toes hang over or your heel slips off the back, try another size. Some Birkenstock styles come in regular and narrow widths, worth bearing in mind if you have slim feet. Care

Clean synthetic uppers with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, then leave them to dry in the shade, away from direct sun and radiators. Leather benefits from a nourishing cream now and then so it doesn't dry out. If the footbed picks up sweat marks, give it a gentle brush and let it air between wears. Rotating two pairs in high summer helps both last longer.
