The Birkenstock Gizeh black toe-post sandal (code 43691) is the German brand's summer staple: a T-shaped strap between the toes, a side buckle and the famous cork footbed that gradually moulds to your foot as you wear it. Simple, easy and ready for everyday life on the Costa del Sol.

Materials and comfort

The strap is made from Birko-Flor, Birkenstock's synthetic material with a leather-like finish, so it copes with the odd splash and wipes clean with a damp cloth. The footbed is cork and latex with a soft suede lining where your foot rests, and a deep heel cup keeps your foot properly positioned as you walk. Underneath is a light, flexible EVA sole that cushions each step without adding weight. Made in Germany.

Fit

The metal pin buckle lets you adjust the strap across the instep so your foot feels secure rather than sliding about. The footbed feels firm at first; after a few days of wear the cork takes on the shape of your foot and the fit becomes your own. This version comes in the regular width.

How to wear it

Black makes it effortless: pair it with linen shorts or chinos, rolled-up jeans, or swim shorts for a trip down to the beach. It's an ideal holiday sandal, just as handy for getting around town in the August heat as for pottering about the house and garden.
