Men's lace-up shoes

Men's lace-up shoes are the pair that does a bit of everything: chinos for the office on Monday, jeans for a stroll along the seafront at the weekend. Every style in this selection comes from Pikolinos, with leather uppers in easy-to-wear shades of blue, tan, khaki and Pacific.

You'll find models such as Berna, Manacor, Fuencarral and San Juan, ranging from smarter designs to a more casual, trainer-inspired look, all suitable for wearing year-round. Laces let you fine-tune the fit across the instep, which makes a real difference when you're on your feet for hours.

Choosing the right pair

Start with where you'll wear them most. For the office or dinner out, a clean-lined shoe in a darker shade such as blue works well. For everyday wear, tan or khaki pairs nicely with jeans, chinos and linen trousers – handy in the Costa del Sol climate. If you prefer something more relaxed, look at the trainer-style options, which keep the lace-up fastening with a laid-back feel.

Leather and comfort

All the shoes in this section have leather uppers. Leather breathes better than synthetic materials and gradually moulds to the shape of your foot, so a new pair may feel a little firm for the first few days before it softens up. When you try them on, pay attention to the sole too: one that flexes with your foot makes a long day of walking far easier.

Fit and sizing

Laces let you adjust the pressure over the instep, but you still need the right size from the start:

  • Leave a little room in front of your toes; the toe box shouldn't pinch.
  • Your heel should feel held and not slip as you walk.
  • Try shoes on later in the day, when feet tend to be slightly larger.

Looking after your shoes

  • Brush off dust or wipe them with a soft cloth after wearing.
  • Feed the leather with a suitable cream every few weeks, testing it first on a hidden area.
  • If they get wet, stuff them with paper and let them dry at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sun.
  • Rotate pairs when you can so the leather has time to air out.
  • Loosen the laces before taking them off rather than forcing your foot out – it helps the heel keep its shape.
